Farm Excursion - Building forth on Horticulture
Moving forward with horticulture!
Do you want to experience a day full of inspiration, knowledge sharing and hands-on experience? Do you want to see how our food is produced and do you have creative ideas on how this can be even more sustainable? Then we have a great opportunity for you with lots of creative freedom for a possible internship, research or graduation project at a physical location, with professional support from Stichting Innovatie Glastuinbouw Nederland!
On Tuesday March 19th, Local2Local and Stichting Innovatie Glastuinbouw Nederland are organising a day dedicated to the transition of greenhouse horticulture. We will zoom in on adding value to the (huge) residual streams that come out of greenhouse horticulture.
The day is free of charge, and you can register via this form.
We visit a vegetable grower and a potted plant grower. You get a tour at the 'Living Lab' in Bleiswijk, a practical hub focused on residual flows. Here, two experts with extensive experience in greenhouse horticulture give a presentation on the innovations and experiments that have already been carried out.
We will then get practical in the Living Lab with a number of experiments to convert waste streams into food, building materials and nutrients, for example, and hold a brainstorming session with your ideas for greenhouse horticulture. These will form the basis for future projects to be carried out in the Living Lab.
The Living Lab is part of SIGN's Circular Horticulture 2021-2025 programme.
So as a student you have a great opportunity to shape your internship, research, or graduation project and work at the Living Lab. Financial support is also possible here.
Transportation: ride with us from Utrecht (indicate this in the registration form) or join us at Delft station if you are not from Utrecht.
Program:
09:00 - Arrival and welcome
Gather at Delft train station for a welcome, meet fellow students and organisers.
09:30 - Visit to the vegetable grower (you may also travel here directly)
Discover the world of vegetable growing and learn about the different residual streams that are created here. (Vegetable grower Duijvestijn, Komkommerweg 25, 2641 NH Pijnacker)
11:00 - Visit to potted plant and flower grower
Explore the colourful side of greenhouse farming and discover the residual streams generated here.
12:00 - Lunch at the Living Lab
Enjoy lunch at the Living Lab.
12:30 - Introduction by the experts and a Living Lab tour
Meet experts sharing their knowledge and tour the Living Lab.
13:15 - Workshop Round 1 + use Living Lab-facilities for practical work
For example: (exact details to be determined later)
- Residual fiber sheet material: learn about biobased building materials and how to use residual fibers to create mycelium objects or press A5 test plates using the pneumatic workshop press.
- Laser cutting: experiment with the BRM laser cutter by engraving and cutting a cover plate made from roadside grass.
- Pressed juices: apply different methods to extract juices from residual streams, work with previous analyses to analyze content, or do a tasting to determine whether your pressed juice has potential as a consumer product.
14:45 - Workshop Round 2 + Brainstorm
Brainstorm with an expert and your group based on examples of applications with fibers and juices about applications that can still be explored. The goal is to generate a good idea that will be further developed with the support of SIGN and the Living Lab in the following months.
16:00 - Presentation
Present your group’s ideas during the brainstorming session; collectively, we will assess which of these ideas seem most feasible. Financial support from SIGN may be available for the best ideas to further develop in the Living Lab.
17:00 - Closing drinks
Register quickly via this form and get ready for a fun and informative day. We look forward to welcoming you to this excursion on March 19th!
