Maanskyn takes place in the Balule Nature Reserve, in South-Africa. In the documentary we follow Tsakane, a 27 year old ranger of the Black Mambas Anti-Poaching Unit. The first anti-poaching unit in the world that’s only consisting of women and who operate completely unarmed. The women work in a man dominated area full of prejudices and traditions. They strive towards a better future for both nature and women in South-Africa. In the film we get to know the woman behind the uniform, the strong but also vulnerable side become visible.
We, Floor and Beatrijs, graduated last year from The University of the Arts Utrecht with our film Maanskyn. This intriguing story spoke to us both immediately. In our films we often portrait someone who’s story is like a metaphor for a bigger story. In this film it is the women who act completely in agreement with their beliefs. A belief that Nature should be respected and restored so that future generations can keep enjoying its beauty and wonders. We hope to keep making films about inspiring stories in the future.
